Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the military’s violent actions against civilians in Bawku following the killing of a soldier. He has called for accountability and urged peaceful collaboration to restore order.
Ayariga denounced the brutalities inflicted by the military in parts of the Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, describing their actions as unacceptable. He vowed to demand full accountability from the security forces responsible.
While expressing regret over the killing of the soldier by an unknown assailant, Ayariga insisted that ransacking homes, assaulting innocent civilians, and holding the town hostage were equally condemnable.
“The rule of law must be upheld. Soldiers entrusted with maintaining order should never resort to such actions,” he stated.
He urged the leadership of Bawku and the military to collaborate in investigating the soldier’s killing rather than retaliating against civilians.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved soldier’s family and sympathizing with victims of the military’s actions, Ayariga also expressed disappointment that military command ignored his earlier appeal for restraint and instead took a heavy-handed approach.
“We must work together,” the MP emphasized, calling for calm and cooperation to restore peace in the troubled area.
Additionally, he expressed confidence in Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II’s leadership, believing he could play a key role in resolving the crisis.
“I trust that all parties will place their faith in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he stated.
The ongoing conflict in Bawku, which has experienced recurring violence over the years, remains a significant security concern in Ghana.
