Military Officer Shot Dead in Bawku, Heightening Tensions in the Upper East Region
A military officer has been shot and killed in Bawku, Upper East Region, by unidentified gunmen, further escalating tensions in the already volatile area, according to security sources.
The officer, identified as a Warrant Officer Class Two, was reportedly killed on the morning of Monday, March 17, 2025, near a military buffer zone established in one of the town’s key conflict areas.
His death adds to the growing concerns in Bawku, where a joint security task force has been deployed since 2021 to maintain peace amid ongoing violent clashes. This marks the third security personnel to be killed by armed assailants in the region since the resurgence of conflict.
In a tragic incident on January 23, 2022, Constable Regina Angenu, a policewoman from the Paga Police Command, was fatally shot by unknown gunmen while riding a motorbike with a male colleague. On April 3, 2023, three officers from the Ghana Immigration Service were ambushed near Missiga; 42-year-old Philip Motey was killed, while the other two officers suffered severe injuries.
With the recent murder of the army officer on March 17, 2025, the targeted attacks on security personnel in Bawku have escalated, raising significant concerns about the safety of both security forces and local residents.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the attackers, and investigations are underway.
The security situation in Bawku remains tense, with growing calls for urgent action and long-term solutions to address the ongoing conflict.
