Tragedy in Bawku: Two Ghanaian Police Officers Fatally Shot by Unknown Gunmen in Binduri
Two off-duty Ghanaian police officers have been tragically gunned down by unidentified assailants in Binduri, a known conflict hotspot within the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region. The deadly attack occurred on the evening of Sunday, April 13, 2024.
According to initial reports, the officers, who were dressed in plain clothes, were traveling on a private motorbike from Bongo to Binduri. Though not officially on duty, they were believed to be in the area to support ongoing peacekeeping efforts amid the persistent unrest in Bawku.
Tragically, they were ambushed and fatally shot by the unidentified gunmen, who also fled the scene with the officers’ motorbike. The lifeless bodies of the two officers were later discovered along the roadside.
In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service, through Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, confirmed the heartbreaking incident. She described it as a devastating blow to the service and the nation and assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway to track down the perpetrators.
The Ghana Police Service extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and hailed the fallen officers for their dedication and bravery in working toward peace in one of the country’s most volatile regions.
The killings have once again amplified calls for intensified security measures in the Bawku enclave, where longstanding ethnic tensions have continued to fuel violence and instability.
